...was the cheerful greeting we received as we entered the charming restaurant in Bell Street, Reigate. We were shown to our table and made to feel instantly welcome.

The warm lighting made for an intimate and relaxing atmosphere and, although the evening was early, la Barbe was pretty much in full swing. The sounds of chatting and laughter sifted through the air from various pockets of this rustic restaurant.

Sipping our raspberry and champagne aperitif we listened to our waitress enthusiastically describe the mouth-watering 'Specials of the Day' all of which I had to order! My husband painstakingly deliberated over and finally ordered from the autumn menu (available to view online at www.labarbe.co.uk).

An extensive wine list is available and comes with clever recommendations.

Andy Started with the tiger prawns stir-fried with ginger and chili butter, garnished with a roasted pepper salad. He ordered a main of pan-fried venison steak served with a wild mushroom sauce and mash potatoes, finishing with warm fine apple tart served with a salted butter toffee ice cream.

I ordered soup of the day, pan-fried lemon sole with asparagus, with a side order of spinach with nutmeg, finishing with a zesty lemon tart.

Our experience more than fulfilled the promise of the menu. Each course was savoured individually from the beautiful presentation to the distinguishing flavour and texture of each dish.

We were delighted when Laurent, head chef, took the time to visit us at our table. He revealed how he had created the lemon sole dish that I had enjoyed so much.
